When would you need to file a Form 8809?

  • If you need more time to file your W-2, 1099, 1098, 3921, 3922, 1042-S, or 1095-B, you may file this form.

  • Filing this form will give you an automatic 30-day extension of the deadline for the form. You must file Form 8809 by the due date of the returns in order to get the 30-day extension. You may apply for an additional 30-day extension, if you meet certain hardship condition qualifications
  • Please note: For tax year 2019, the IRS has discontinued the use of the 8809 for automatic extensions in some filing situations. W-2 forms and 1099-MISC forms with a Box 7 amount are no longer eligible. Please make every attempt to submit these forms on time.
